Segment Creation

Segment Creation in FunnelManager allows you to use any data field to set up complex segment rules via the segment rule builder.

To create a segment, select the ‘+’ button above the Segment Table. This will open the Create Segment wizard.

Segment Set Up

To create a campaign, follow these initial steps:

  • Add Segment Name

  • Add Description – a short note to describe the segment for other users

  • Select Category (see below)

  • Select Folder (not compulsory)

Once these steps have been completed, the user can proceed onto the second screen of the campaign wizard to define an audience.

Segment Definition

In order to create the segment definition, the user must use the Boolean Rule Builder.

It is best to have a clear understanding of the rules you want to build prior to creating the segment definition. For more complex segment definitions, this will involve sketching out how the rules are structured to ensure the correct audience is captured.

IMPORTANT: Before the user can define any segment rule, the desired category must be selected. The category selection preloads the available data groups and fields which will be used in the segment definition.

The first rule of the segment definition is preloaded in the segment builder.

Each rule in the builder can be defined by following these steps:

  • Select the data field group required (this step preloads the data fields)

  • Select the data field required (this step preloads the logic and values)

  • Select the logic expression from the field-specific dropdown list

  • Select (from a dropdown list) or enter the data field value. Value expressions are also listed for certain fields (e.g. date expressions)

Certain data fields may be eligible for data collection, and a Collect Field tickbox will appear to activate this feature.

For data fields with multiple values, the Raw Value functionality can be used for ease of entry.

Additional rules and grouped rules can be added using the mouseover controls to the right of each rule (the first is expanded above to show the “Add Rule” and “Add Group” buttons).

The ‘Add Rule’ button in the mouseover controls for the first rule of any level in the builder adds a further rule entry to that level.

A further level, for grouped rule expressions can be added to the definition using the ‘Add Level’ button in these mouseover controls. (Note: Segment definitions can begin with grouped rules; simply delete the preloaded rule line).

The first level to be added may utilise the Blacklisted Rules functionality.

Each rule may be deleted using the mouseover “Delete this condition” button to the right of the line item.

At each level, the logic defining how the rules are linked (AND, OR, (OR) NOT) is displayed on the top left of that level. The default logic is ‘AND’.

Collect Fields

For certain segment rules in the definition, the field can be selected for collection. This means that the field values for each profile will be stored alongside the profile identifier and the data will be provided in the channel activation.

Raw Values

When configured, the raw value functionality allows the user to enter and/or edit a pre-prepared list of data values to the rule.

Selecting “Raw Value” will open a lightbox for entry and editing of the data list.

Blacklisted Rules

Blacklisting allows users to define a grouping rule against individual data field groups to be ‘blacklisted’ or excluded from the segment rule. This will result in profiles that match that expression being removed from the defined segment (rather than included).

The functionality to blacklist individual rule groupings has been expanded in version 3.1.1 to allow for multiple blacklists and optional blacklist counts (for use cases that require an event count, for example). As such, blacklisting has been relocated from within the main segment builder to additional tabs within the builder to specify each blacklist required.

The rule that a blacklisted grouping can only be selected from a single data field group remains, but with multiple blacklists, exclusions can be included on a group-by-group basis.

Within the UI, blacklists are defined on separate tabs that can be added and removed. The blacklist requires a data field group to be selected and then the blacklisted rule to be constructed similarly to the segment rule. A logic and count selection are optional to provide further detail to the blacklist implementation (based on the use case required).

Segment Save

Once the segment definition is complete, the segment can be saved. The Segment Summary will load and an audience estimate will be queued to provide an initial snapshot report of the available audience.
